Re: Troll Physics
Well well, I've been slacking on these lately, huh? Get ready for a super long post.
This one's relatively simple:
In Scribblenauts, Troll Physics = Valid Physics
YouTube user Cidwel shows us how the Nintendo DS game Scribblenauts, a game where players can summon almost anything they can think up in order to solve puzzles, accepts Troll Physics, a popular meme that teaches incorrect-but-humorous science, as valid physics.
Here’s the Troll Physics portrayal:

This one hurts my head:
Pi does not equal 4
//For those that don't want to read this semi-complicated proof, skip this; I'll include a tl;dr/common sense/thought-based proof later.//
Thank you to all involved, even the reddit troll, since this little bit brings to light some of the problems involved in dealing with infinity carelessly.

tl;dr: The idea is based on the equation circumference = pi * diameter. It attempts to prove that the perimeter equals circumference, while diameter equals 1. C should therefore be interchangeable with perimeter, and pi = circumference / diameter = perimeter / diameter = 4 / 1 = 4.
However, Removing the corners of the square does nothing to affect perimeter; therefore, the perimeter never approaches the actual circumference of the circle. The perimeter, therefore, cannot be substituted for the circumference.
wtl;dr (way too long, didn't read): The picture works based on a faulty assumption.
I hope that wasn't way too complicated for you guys.. if it was, enjoy the Scribblenauts post.

- Spoiler:
- This actually bothered me a little bit, not because I believed it, but because I couldn’t find anything wrong with the argument, just the conclusion. My first guess as to why it was wrong was in the second step, where two smaller rectangles were removed, but I worked it out myself and they turned out to be square, so that wasn’t the problem.
I continued working on it for a while and sent it to one of my friends from graph theory, she found the flaw in it before I did, and it’s in the final step, where you “repeat the procedure to infinity”.
Repeating things to infinity requires a demonstration of the limiting behaviour of a function. In this case, the function we are investigating is a function where S is defined inductively to be:
The square of perimeter 4 is in S
If a curve C is in S, then a curve just like C but with corners indented like the above graphic (the inner corner on the right is on the unit circle) is also in S
Taking this inductive definition to be the entirety of S, it follows that S is well-ordered, totally ordered and countably infinite, and therefore a bijection between S and the natural numbers exists.
This bijection will allow us to study the limiting behavior of the function. The basis step shows that the least element has perimeter 4. Then, in the induction step, a perimeter-preserving transformation produces the next element in the set. It follows by well-founded induction that all elements in S have perimeter 4, no problem there.
Define to mean apply f composed with itself to x, n times. . Starting with an element f(x) appears more “round”, the claim from the reddit troll is that the limit of is a circle, this is the suspect part that my friend determined was bogus.
The troll’s argument is superficially similar to Archimedes’ approximation of the value of π. Archimedes used polygons inscribed in a circle to find the approximate value of pi:
Notice that at each step, the angles decrease, so the shape rounds out more, and the perimeter changes. With the troll’s argument, all of the angles involved are right angles, so as the n increases, the curve may grip the circle more closely, but it will forever remain jagged and fraught with right angles.
The limit of f as n approaches infinity is not a circle, it’s some right angled fractal beast [edit: I've been corrected, the limit is a circle, but the length of the curve is defined in terms of the derivatives, which means that it is not defined on the corners], pi does not equal 4, proceed to infinity with caution.
Thank you to all involved, even the reddit troll, since this little bit brings to light some of the problems involved in dealing with infinity carelessly.

Re: Troll Physics
lol, enjoyed, thanks. This reminds me of my Trig and Calc days in HS for some reason, working with functions. Shame I never took them up thru college, but I think I was sick of them to keep going after HS.
I'mma watch the youtube tomorrow during a break...

Re: Troll Physics
I was going to say before reading through the post that even if you were to take that to infinity, it's relying on removing an even section of each corner, so it would be technically impossible to ever create a smooth curve. It would look smooth when you got into the billions, yes, but it's just like anything drawn as a raster graphic, if you zoom in enough you'll see the jagged edge of the pixels.

Yar. And I'd think bears would still be hibernating, not up and about as things got colder too.

Re: Troll Physics
I wonder if anyone has ever actually tried to grab themselves and pull up to stop falling? I suppose it's one of those things that will never be known, for anyone who has tried probably isn't around any more.

I think you are my hero. Sad part was a classmate of mine (in engineering) asked if the light one really worked.
